The further enhancement of bilateral cooperation between Cyprus and the USA in the field of defence was discussed on Tuesday morning by the US Assistant Secretary of Defence for International Security Affairs, Celeste Wallander, and the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, in the presence of Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas at the Presidential Palace.
In her remarks after the meeting, Wallander stated that it was “a great opportunity for me to hear the strategic vision (of the President) for the Republic of Cyprus and to understand his appreciation for our bilateral defence relationship, which has developed in huge and important ways over the past two years under his leadership.”
The US Assistant Secretary added that they discussed opportunities to expand the cooperation program between the New Jersey National Guard and the National Guard of the Republic of Cyprus, exploring opportunities for professional military education, joint exercises, and training for capability building in very specific ways.
“The President shared with me his understanding of the requirements for regional security and stability and the role that the United States, in cooperation with the Republic of Cyprus, can play in enhancing this security and providing stability for the people of the region and, of course, for all the citizens of the Republic of Cyprus,” Wallander added.
She noted that she is excited to leave “with additional work we can do together, and I am determined to continue developing the defence relationship between the United States and the Republic of Cyprus.”
