President Christodoulides is set to respond to Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan’s claims for recognition of the occupied north during his address to the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday.
Christodoulides’ speech, scheduled for 6 p.m. (Cyprus time), will focus on regional developments and their connection to the Cyprus issue.
The Cypriot leader’s address follows a crucial trilateral meeting between Cyprus, Greece, and France held on Tuesday evening in New York. The private talks involved Christodoulides, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
“We discussed how to address the worrying developments in the region, which carry serious risks,” Christodoulides told reporters after the meeting.
The leaders agreed that the upcoming Mediterranean EU member states (MED9) meeting in Paphos would prioritise regional developments, with Jordan’s King Abdullah II set to attend, underscoring the country’s role as a regional stabiliser.
Discussions also touched on the electrical interconnection between Cyprus and Greece, with French interest in participating in this “project of strategic importance”, Christodoulides said.
The President added that his UN speech would highlight Cyprus’s role in regional developments, a position he claims has been welcomed by the UN Secretary-General and numerous foreign leaders.
The address is expected to respond directly to Erdogan’s earlier intervention regarding regional issues and the Cyprus problem, including prospects for restarting negotiations.
