Press | Athens’ “lost paradise” for Israelis

In its latest multi-page weekly edition, the widely circulated Israeli newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth characterizes today’s Athens as a “lost paradise” for the Israeli visitor.
“The once beloved city that opened its heart to the Israeli visitor now shows him its angry face,” the publication states, then citing a long list of recent incidents of violence against Israelis.
The climate described in the Greek countryside is similar. Middle-income Israelis who have chosen to live permanently in villages on Lesvos in recent years describe their new reality in grim terms. Although they say they do not fully agree with the choices made by their country’s government, they feel targeted by left-wing activists and a section of local SYRIZA officials. “We are treated as apologists for a policy that, after all, was not our choice,” could be the central idea of their stories.
