A new shipping venture from the Prokopiou clan in Greece has emerged with brokers reporting a first LR1 purchase.
Marielena Procopiou, the daughter of Greek tycoon George Prokopiou, is behind a new shipowning outfit named Akrotiri Tankers.
The company quietly made its first purchase in May, adding the 2008-built, 77,000 dwt Hafnia Thames from Hafnia. The ship has been renamed with a not-so-quiet name, Bam Bam, a reference to a baby character in the cartoon series The Flintstones. The Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co-built tanker was sold for $28m.
Marielena Procopiou already has her own shipping firm, Delos Navigation, founded in 2021.
Her sister, Ioanna Prokopiou, also has her own shipping venture, Prominence Maritime, founded 14 years ago, while two other sisters, Eliza and Marina, are also involved in the shipping business.
Greek shipping legend George Prokopiou is behind many big names in Greek shipping including Dynacom Tankers, Dynagas Holding, Dynagas LNG Partners, Hellenic Shipyards, and Sea Traders.
