The trial of Simon Mistriel Aykut, charged with the land appropriation of Greek Cypriot land in the Turkish-occupied areas of Famagusta and Kyrenia, has been postponed until January 27 to allow defence preparations.
Aykut, 74, faces 242 charges related to the appropriation of 60 land plots belonging to Greek Cypriots, including fraud, illegal possession and use of property, conspiracy to defraud, and money laundering involving 43.5 million euros.
Defence lawyer Maria Neophytou requested the delay to review the charge sheet with her client, examine two recent Court of Appeal decisions, and prepare a medical report following Aykut’s examination in prison by a doctor who travelled from abroad.
The case centres on developments by AFIK GROUP’s subsidiary Duminka, which launched the “Caesar Project” including several residential developments in Gastria, Akanthou, Ayios Amvrosios Kyrenia, and Trikomo areas.
The money laundering charges involve 43.5 million euros, with Aykut facing up to 14 years in prison if convicted. The prosecution has listed more than 100 witnesses for the trial.
