Rebrain Greece, the national initiative designed to reverse the brain drain and support the return of Greeks living abroad, is heading to New York for its next major outreach event. On Sunday, 7 December, the Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance will host ReBrain Greece NY at the Marriott Marquis in Times Square, an effort officials describe as one of the government’s strongest steps yet toward repatriation.
According to senior officials from the Ministry, Rebrain Greece has evolved into one of the most targeted and effective mechanisms for attracting highly skilled Greeks back to the country.
Connecting diaspora professionals with jobs in Greece
The New York event will bring together representatives from 35 leading companies operating in Greece, aiming to link highly specialised Greek professionals living in the United States and Canada with high-quality job opportunities back home.
Interest has been especially strong from Greek diaspora communities in New York, Boston, Washington, California, Florida, Houston, Connecticut, Chicago, Arizona, Missouri, Minnesota, Indiana and Ohio, as well as across Canada.
Registrations span a wide range of fields, with the most in-demand specialisations including engineering, ICT professionals, finance experts, senior executives, scientific researchers, software engineers, application designers, civil engineers and medical doctors.
Three-pillar strategy for repatriation
Ministry officials emphasise that the government’s repatriation strategy is centred on three key pillars:
1. Improving conditions in Greece
– Abolishing more than 80 taxes
– Reducing social security contributions
– Creating 500,000 new jobs over the last five years
– Lowering unemployment to 8 per cent, a 17-year low
– Ensuring political and economic stability
2. Tailored incentives for diaspora Greeks
– A 50 per cent income tax reduction for seven years for those who return
– Automatic recognition of medical specialisations for doctors trained in the US—now expanded to include Canada, the UK, Switzerland, Australia and New Zealand
3. Promoting professional opportunities
– A series of information and networking events bringing professionals face-to-face with Greek employers
– Direct engagement with companies about roles, industry needs and the current work landscape in Greece
Strong international interest
So far, Rebrain Greece events in Amsterdam, Düsseldorf, London and Stuttgart have drawn over 5,000 interested participants and more than 120 corporate delegations, highlighting the strong interest among expatriate Greeks in reconnecting with the Greek job market.
Each event includes a presentation on Greece’s employment landscape by the Minister of Labour and Social Insurance, along with extensive Q&A sessions and thousands of in-person interviews between candidates and company representatives.
A growing trend toward return
Eurostat data shows that of the 660,000 Greeks who left the country between 2010 and 2023, around 420,000 have already returned—a shift Ministry officials say underscores Rebrain Greece’s effectiveness as a tool for reclaiming Greece’s human capital.
