A tourist hiking on the Greek island of Crete was fatally hurt in a rockslide after a sudden downpour, officials said Wednesday.
The woman in her early 30s was given first aid but died before she could be taken to hospital, the head of staff at Samaria Gorge, one of the island’s most popular destinations, told Mega TV.
“A falling rock…cut into her thigh,” Alkiviadis Pentarakis told the station.
“The area can be dangerous in poor weather,” he added. “It was a sudden downpour.”
There was confusion regarding the woman’s nationality, described in some reports as a Ukrainian living in Germany.
The state agency monitoring Greek national parks, OFYPEKA, in a statement said there were no other significant injuries among over 1,000 hikers in the ravine at the time.
The fire service told AFP it had assisted other visitors to exit the gorge, but nobody was trapped by the rockslide.
The 16-kilometre (10-mile) gorge, one of Europe’s longest, will remain closed pending an inspection by geologists, OFYPEKA said.
