A Russian olympian wrestler turned politician has died after reportedly falling out of his bedroom window in Moscow, but the circumstances of his death are shrouded in mystery Three-time Olympic champion and lawmaker Buyvasar Saitiev died at the age of 50 on March 2, and his wife said she was not at home at the time of his fall.
According to Russian newspaper Moskovskij Komsomolets, Saitiev’s wife Indira said when she left the house he was lying in bed, dozing and watching television. She said: “I think it was just an accident.”
Indira said her husband suffered pelvic injuries and rib fractures. She said: “Perhaps Buivasar was not fully aware of what he was doing.
“He suffered from a serious lung disease and was forced to take strong painkillers.”
Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov said on his Telegram channel that Saitiev had heart problems and had been having treatment at a Moscow hospital.
A janitor found Saitiev in critical condition on Minskaya Street. Baza, a Telegram channel linked to Russian security services, said Saitiev had no visible injuries or signs of bleeding, initially making the circumstances of his condition unclear.”
Saitiev was reportedly taken to the hospital, but they could not save him. The freestyle wrestling champion later became a member of President Putin’s ruling United Russia Party.
The county’s sports minister, Mikhail Degtyarev, described Saitiev’s death as “premature and tragic”.
Baza said that, during questioning, Saitiev’s brother said he may have fallen while doing housework.
Kadyrov said: “This is an irreparable loss for the entire country, for the world of sports, for everyone who knew this outstanding person.”
There have been an upsurge in prominent Russians falling from windows since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Chair of Russian oil giant Lukoil, Ravil Maganov, was found dead in 2022 after falling from a hospital. In 2023, Russian tycoon Pavel Antov fell from a window in India. He had criticised Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.
Before his political career, Saitiev won gold medals at the Olympics in Atlanta (1996), Athens (2004), and Beijing (2008) before retiring in 2009.
