Sam Konstas’s prospects of a Boxing Day Test debut for Australia are gaining momentum, with the 19-year-old opener taking significant steps to prepare for the challenge of facing India’s Jasprit Bumrah at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
Training scheduled to begin today marks Konstas’s first integration into the national team setup. Notably, his personal batting coach, former Bangladesh first-class cricketer Tahmid Islam, has traveled from Sydney to provide additional support.
Islam’s presence is unconventional, as personal coaches rarely accompany players during Test match preparations. However, Konstas’ youth and lack of prior experience with head coach Andrew McDonald and assistant Michael Di Venuto warranted the move. Islam’s mentorship, which began during Konstas’ time at Sydney’s Cranbrook School, has been instrumental in his development.
Konstas’ inclusion in the Australian Test squad comes amid discussions about shaking up the top order. According to selection chair George Bailey, Konstas’s dynamic playing style contrasts with the more conservative approaches of incumbents Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne, offering Australia a fresh option to counter India’s formidable pace attack.
“The way our top three are playing has been reasonably similar, and we’d like to throw something different at India,” Bailey explained. “Sam’s method and style are unique, and his ability to take on the bowlers complements our lineup.”
For Konstas, the prospect of making his Test debut on cricket’s grand stage is a childhood dream come true. Speaking about the potential challenge of facing Bumrah, Konstas said, “I won’t watch too much. I’ve already seen him a lot. But I’m excited to challenge myself and face him.”
Konstas revealed the emotional reaction of his family when he received the news. “I was in the nets when I got the call from [head selector] George Bailey. I called my parents straight away. Mum was in tears, and Dad was super proud. It’s been an amazing journey, and I’m grateful for their sacrifices.”
Islam, who has also worked closely with former Australian all-rounder Shane Watson, reflected on their collaboration. “We’ve focused on technical improvements and mental resilience. Shane has been a fantastic mentor, guiding Sam through the mental and technical aspects of his game.”
While Konstas’ recent Big Bash League performance included a disappointing duck, his earlier explosive innings of 56 runs off 27 balls against the Adelaide Strikers showcased his potential. Reflecting on the journey, Konstas expressed confidence.
“I’ve got a few plans against those [Indian] bowlers. I’m just going to react to the ball and show intent,” the Greek Australian said.
