The African career diplomat Khassim Diagne has been given the green light by the Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot communities to take over as the UN Chief’s Special Representative on the island, succeeding Australian Colin Stewart, whose tenure ended last month.
The Senegalese national is expected to arrive on the island in the near future, with the UN expecting guarantor powers Greece, Turkey and the UK to also formally approve the appointment.
An official statement will be issued in late August and Diagne will be assuming his duties in the fall.
