Severe head injuries killed national guardsman in car incident, autopsy finds

Nineteen-year-old National Guardsman Christos Christaki died from severe head trauma on Saturday evening, losing his battle for life following a fall from a friend’s car on 18th August.
The cause of death was confirmed by post-mortem examination conducted at Nicosia Hospital mortuary.
Funeral set for Tuesday afternoon
The young man’s funeral will be held at 4:30pm at the Church of Apostle Luke.
The family will not receive condolences, requesting that attendees wear white clothing. Instead of wreaths, donations will be made to support the family.
Aradippou Municipality expressed profound grief over the 19-year-old’s untimely death, announcing it had decided to cancel a festival event scheduled for Wednesday at St Fanourios Church courtyard as a gesture of support for the family.
Incident occurred at Mackenzie car park
The tragic incident occurred at 11:30pm on Monday 18th August in the large car park behind entertainment venues in Mackenzie. A group of friends, mostly licensed national guardsmen, had gathered at the location after leaving a restaurant in the area.
Initially police investigated a traffic accident; however, based on new statements from those involved, a 19-year-old friend of the deceased was arrested for causing grievous bodily harm and negligent and reckless acts.
According to court testimony during his two-day remand, the fatally injured 19-year-old allegedly lay on the front bonnet of his friend’s moving vehicle and fell from it under circumstances still being investigated.
Legal proceedings pending
The 19-year-old was released without charge pending completion of Larnaca CID investigations. According to philenews sources, the case file will be forwarded to the Law Office for instructions to determine whether the 19-year-old will face criminal prosecution.
Medical treatment details
The 19-year-old was transported by friends to Larnaca General Hospital. Due to the serious nature of his condition, he was intubated and urgently transferred to Nicosia General Hospital, where he was admitted to intensive care.
The young man died shortly after 6pm on Saturday at the American Medical Center in Nicosia.
The post-mortem was conducted by Head of Forensic Medicine Dr Angeliki Papetta and forensic pathologist Dr Orthodoxos Orthodoxou.
