During the first official visit to Crete by the International Organization of UNESCO, after the declaration of the Minoan palaces as World Heritage Sites, the Mayor of Sitia, Mr. George Zervakis, met with the President of the Greek National Commission for UNESCO, Ms. Ekaterini Tzitzikosta.
Ms. Tzitzikosta, accompanied by her close associates, was at the Municipal Office of Sitia and after having a very interesting conversation with Mr. Zervakis, in the presence of the President of the Municipal Council, Ms. Maros Nikitakis, the Deputy Mayor for Administrative Services, Informatics, Education, Sports and Geopark, Mr. Kostis Lymberiou and the Coordinator of the Geopark of Sitia, Mr. Vangelis Perakis, she gave a press conference to the local media. After the meeting, the Mayor of Sitia symbolically handed Ms. Tzitzikosta a copy of the Minoan Computer of Palekastro.
The long-standing relationship of the organization with the Municipality of Sitia, first with the UNESCO Global Geopark of Sitia and now with the inclusion of the important Minoan Palace of Kato Zakros, creates all the conditions for the cooperation to continue at other levels. As Ms. Tzitzikosta herself assured, the organization’s intention is to support the candidacy for the inclusion of Erotokritos in the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
The representatives of the organization also enthusiastically proposed the financing of the trip of the “Coro Aretousa” Choir to Italy to repay the visit of the “Corale Madonna di San Giovanni” Choir.
As part of Ms. Tzitzikosta’s short visit and her acquaintance with the region, she visited the Minoan Palace of Kato Zakros yesterday.
