The football community is in mourning following the announcement of Takis Xanthopoulos’ death, a huge figure of Australian football.
Mr Xanthopoulos was a strong centre half during his playing career, making his name at both South Melbourne Hellas and Heidelberg United as well as other Greek-Australian clubs.
Both clubs issued their own statements on their social media platforms on Monday to honour their fallen icon.
“South Melbourne is in mourning upon hearing the news of the passing of Club Legend, Championship Winner and Hall of Fame Member Takis Xanthopoulos,” the club’s statement reads.
Their post shed light on his successes with Hellas during his four-season tenure, winning two State League Championships in 1962 and 1964, while acknowledging his ongoing support of the team decades after playing for them.
“He proudly would still attend most of our matches throughout the season and his presence will be greatly missed around Lakeside Stadium and to everyone around the club,” the statement reads.
“We send our love to his family and many friends in the football community during this tough time. We’ll miss you Taki. Rest in Peace.”
Heidelberg also spoke on the deep sadness of losing “one of its great players” in Mr Xanthopoulos, noting his immense contribution to the club which saw him play 147 games between 1966-1972 and lead the team to a championship in 1969.
“The Heidelberg United Football Club Family would like to express its sincere condolences to the Xanthopoulos family during this difficult time. RIP Takis,” Heidelberg’s statement says.
