Tatar claimed that the Greek Cypriot authorities were blocking EU and other international travellers who had booked holidays in North Cyprus. He also alleged that they were pressuring tour operators into compliance.
He called on the Greek Cypriot administration to change its outdated policies, criticising their ongoing 61-year campaign of pressure and isolation, which he said infringes on human rights.
Tatar pointed out that this is not the first time Greek Cypriots have targeted people from other countries who bought property in North Cyprus.
The TRNC plans to bring this issue to the attention of the EU and the international community, and will monitor how the Greek Cypriot administration handles tourism and property issues.
Recently, Greek Cypriot authorities have taken legal action against foreigners who purchased property in North Cyprus, accusing them of “looting Greek Cypriot property.” In the past six months, two Israelis and one German involved in real estate there have been detained and brought to court.
Tatar noted that the Greek Cypriot administration’s attempts to restrict travel and warn tour guides, suggest their negative view of the future of Cyprus.
In a separate report, Kibris Postasi wrote that leader of the Republican Turkish Party (CTP) Tufan Erhürman, strongly criticised the Greek Cypriot administration’s efforts to block day trips by European tourists from the south to North Cyprus until August 31, stating that the Greek Cypriot side is persistently seeking ways to damage the North Cyprus economy.
He said that while President Nikos Christodoulides, on the one hand, says “I am ready to negotiate on the basis of UN Security Council resolutions“, the other hand, he continues to seek ways to harm the TRNC economy by using all methods at his disposal.
Erhürman said in his statement, “After turning to the construction sector by using the property issue and law as an instrument, and after taking initiatives with the competent authorities in Europe regarding the universities in the TRNC, now it is the turn of the tourism sector“.
