Storm “ATENA” has struck Attica, bringing heavy rainfall and widespread disruptions across the region. The Fire Brigade’s Operations Center has received 51 emergency calls so far, with the hardest-hit areas being Patissia, Kypseli, Psychiko, and Galatsi. These calls include 34 for water pumping, eight for tree cutting, and nine for elevator rescues as floodwaters and strong winds cause chaos.
In response to the storm, a 112 emergency alert was issued to residents in Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, as well as the islands of Thasos, Samothrace, Lemnos, and Agios Efstratios, warning them of dangerous weather conditions expected to last until early Wednesday afternoon.
Security and Armed Forces remain on high alert to manage potential flooding and other impacts from “ATENA.”
In a coordination meeting on Monday, led by Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Vasilis Kikilias, it was decided that the Fire Brigade will deploy EMAK units with boats to assist citizens in case of flooding.
Additionally, the Fire Brigade is on standby for water pumping operations as needed.
Sources from Civil Protection have confirmed that the Armed Forces, Coast Guard, and Hellenic Police are also prepared to provide support, including traffic management and citizen rescues.
Earlier, the Scientific Risk Assessment Committee convened to assess the storm’s potential dangers and outline further safety measures.
