Christou’s performance and a silver medal for Greece
Christou competed against some of the world’s best swimmers and managed to complete the 200 meter backstroke with an impressive time of 1:54.82. This placed him just behind Hungary’s Hubert Kos, who won the gold with a slightly faster time of 1:54.65.
The medal brings hope that Greece is gradually rising up in the world of swimming. Christou’s performance in Paris will hopefully be followed by additional achievements for Greek athletes on the national, European, and global levels.
News of Christou’s silver medal quickly spread across Greece, and congratulatory messages poured out from every corner of the nation as Greeks were overtaken by national pride.
Among those who commented on Christou’s success was Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. In a post on X (formerly Twitter) the Prime Minister expressed his admiration for the Greek swimmer’s achievement, stating:
“Congratulations to Apostolos Christou for winning the silver medal in the men’s 200m backstroke at the Paris 2024 Olympics! Persist, fight, come back and win! A great vindication for our athlete, a moment of joy and pride for all of us.”
On their behalf, the Hellenic Olympic Committee congratulated the Greek athlete with posts on various social media platforms. “Amazing, incredible, unique Apostolos Christou won the silver medal at the Olympic Games. The champion got in the 200 [meter] backstroke what he deserved in the 100 as well, with a time of 1.54.82. Bravo Apostole!” the Committee noted triumphantly.
