As the recent success of Sydney’s Greek Fest and Antipodes in Melbourne fades, the Mytilenians in Sydney have temporarily taken the mantle for community events.
Almost 300 people attended the debut of “To Tavernaki Mas”, bringing a monthly taverna night back to Canterbury on Friday February 28, which was highlighted by a 94th birthday for one of the members.
The opening night was also an opportunity for the Mytilenian Brotherhood to pay their respects to the 57 victims of the Tempi rail disaster which occurred two years ago.

Committee member Jojo Alexiou invited the entire venue to stand for a minute’s silence. A reflection of a tragedy that we need to remember, advocate for answers and lobby for better infrastructure for Greece.
Once the solemn reflection concluded, the program featured performers from Lesvos and other parts of Greece including the artistic talents of Ioannis and Stratis Keligiannis, Kosta Papoulidas and Peter Tsenkas.

Tavernaki night will be held on the last Friday of every month.
Next up, the Committee will host a joint Glendi with their Victorian equivalent, Palesviaki Enosis who are bussing up members on Sunday March 9.
President Peter Psomas told Neos Kosmos how excited he is to host the Melbourne representatives. Their equivalent president in Melbourne, Yiannis Karanikolas, echoed Psomas’ enthusiasm.

Psomas discussed how Mytilenian House recently hosted a sold-out youth party, holds weekly Greek dancing lessons and on March 14, a concert featuring headliners Vasilis Batis and Sasa Basta will entertain the masses.
The Mytilenians have also become a host base for the Eremea Home Care Services with a launch on January 29. Father Nectarios Joannou of St Stephanos Greek Orthodox Church, Hurlstone Park, attended and spoke about the significance of the service to provide a supportive and engaging space for older persons. The partnership between the team at Eremea and the Brotherhood will help keep the elderly engaged while offering a new venue for outings and lunches.

A busy time for those from Lesvos. For those who will visit the beautiful island this year, some would say the greatest island in the galaxy, it is a cultured warm up.
