Bulgarian-born French singer Sylvie Vartan and acclaimed Italian actor-director Toni Servillo sang together at the BTA Press Club in Sofia Friday. “I know by heart songs of Sylvie Vartan,” said Servillo at a news conference for the Cinelibri book-to-film festival, and the two performed a short duet.
“Today is a very important day for the CineLibri Festival,” said Jacqueline Wagenstein, the festival’s director, “because today the award-winning films and directors are being announced.” She noted that the film La Grazia by Paolo Sorrentino, starring Toni Servillo in the main role, will have its premiere screening today.
Friday evening, a special award will also be presented to Agnieszka Holland, who will personally attend the ceremony. on Saturday, the films featuring Sylvie Vartan will be shown – a documentary by Georgi Toshev, and a feature film based on a true story, whose Bulgarian title is “Mother and the Miracle of Life,” Wagenstein announced.
French producer Aton Soumache said that he is presenting his own animated film at the festival. According to him, it is wonderful that the connection between book adaptations and cinema is being emphasized.
“We are here to celebrate cinema, books, and the art of telling good stories, and it is an absolute honor for me to be part of this event among so many wonderful people,” said Greek actress Tonya Stavropoulou, a member of the jury.
Film director Sergei Loznitsa pointed out that two of the films presented Thursday were inspired by books – one by W.G. Sebald, and the other adapted from a novella by political prisoner Georgy Demidov.
The chairman of the international jury, Claes Bang, noted that the twelve films they watched this year as part of the program were all very good, making it difficult to choose the best one.
The Bulgarian representative on the jury, Katya Trichkova, said that Friday night, for the first time, the festival will be presenting the Outstanding Female Voice Award, aiming to encourage women creators in the film industry.
Toni Servillo said that this is his first time in Bulgaria. “Yesterday, I met the Bulgarian audience for the first time, and I feel very moved,” he noted, expressing gratitude that the festival is screening three of his films.
He observed that young people are increasingly discovering books through cinema. Today’s generation is growing up with films that shape them as individuals, he added.
He said he had never played a character that resembles him and actually loves portraying characters who are very different from himself.
