The Central Committee of Greece’s SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance has approved a no-confidence motion against its leader, Stefanos Kasselakis, just one year after his election. The motion was supported by 163 members, with 120 voting against it, out of a total of 286 votes cast. Two members voted blank, and one ballot was void.
The no-confidence motion, initiated by the party’s internal opposition, required a simple majority, which it secured. Out of the votes, 210 members participated in person during the secret ballot, while 76 voted remotely.
Following the vote, Kasselakis addressed the committee, expressing a sense of “relief” and accusing the party’s internal factions of undermining his leadership from the outset. He criticized the party’s bureaucracy for not accepting his initial election victory, concluding that his next steps will be announced to the broader SYRIZA base.
Shortly after his statement, Kasselakis left the meeting, as several committee members shouted “shame” in protest. The motion was debated in a tense, heated atmosphere, with disagreements over whether the vote should be held in secret or publicly.
