Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar has taken offence to Netflix over its decision to show the series ‘Famagusta’, which centres around the Turkish invasion of Cyprus.
Tatar has expressed immense dissatisfaction over the streaming service including the series among its content, believing it distorts the facts of the event 50 years ago, Daily Sabah reported.
The series, which will premiere on Netflix on 20 September, depicts the summer of 1974 during the Turkish invasion in Famagusta and is a dramatic adaptation which goes on to follow a family trying to find their child that went missing in their attempt to flee fifty years earlier.
The first season premiered on Mega in January with a second season aired in the middle of the year and a third expected to be shown in the coming months.
Tatar called the series “propaganda” from Greek Cypriots, claimed that “the Turkish army made a short peace operation on the island”.
“The Cyprus issue never started in 1974. The 1974 Cyprus Peace Operation was essentially a military intervention that saved the Turkish Cypriots from genocide,” he said, speaking to CNN Turk.
“This peace is known to Turks and Greeks all over the world that the bloodshed in Cyprus stopped with the 1974 Peace Operation. After 50 years, peace continues in this difficult region. The whole world knows that the Turks of Cyprus were massacred.”
The spokesman of Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), Omer Celik, also addressed the series’ addition to Netflix, posting on his X account the following:
“We cannot accept that the intervention that brought peace and established justice is being targeted by Greek propaganda. The peace operation in Cyprus, the heroic Turkish soldier, peace and justice cannot be targeted through this series.”
Tatar urged Netflix to hear “both sides” when covering content on such stories.
The reaction is indicative of the ongoing tension regarding the events from 1974, which has yet to be resolved in the 50 years since.
