Frankston Pier and beach was busy on Tuesday 6 January and while the warm weather had a large part to play in that, it was the Epiphany celebration Blessing of the Waters and traditional diving for the Holy Cross that saw a big crowd gather.
Church goers, families of the participants, Greeks from the area, non-Greeks, all gathered on the pier to watch.
Even a scuba diving class taking place in the water off the same pier stopped what they were doing to watch.
Sixteen people – men, teens and kids jumped in all vying to be the first to swim to the cross.
But it was 18-year-old Konstantinos (Kosta) Kopsaftis who successful for a second time, having accomplished the feat in 2024 as well.
This was his third time total, having participated last year too.
“I’m feeling really happy and thankful, and hoping it brings me good luck and health and happiness in this new year,” he told Neos Kosmos.
When comparing to when he first retrieved the cross in 2024, he said the feeling is the same as back then.
He said he’s excited to tell the family especially his dad who wanted him to do it and his grandparents.
