The Greek Area 51: The Top-Secret American Base in Greece

The mystery of the works of the American naval base in Nea Makri, Greece, which was shut down in 1990, has people who investigate unexplainable phenomena speak of a Greek Area 51. The construction of the US base at Nea Makri began in 1953 when the military cooperation between the United States and Greece had been solidified as the two countries’ armies allied in the Korean War (1950-1953). The base permanently suspended its operations in August 1990.

Two days before the final lowering of the American flag from the base on August 17, 1990, the following message was read to its personnel (Navy News Service): “…The Nea Makri base ran an impressive “Marathon”, offering telecommunications support immediate, safe and reliable, to the Sixth Fleet, NATO forces in the Mediterranean and American forces in Southeast Asia. You responded successfully to each new challenge… …The technological developments that have occurred over the years have allowed us to relocate our activity elsewhere, without loss in operational capacity…”.

The Nea Makri base was not A NATO base but purely American. The neighboring underground naval telecommunications base at the foot of Penteli Mountain, 5.5 miles away, belonged to the Greek Navy but also served as a NATO base.

The area of the Greek base was expropriated in 1958, with the official justification at the time being the creation of a space to house the national relics of the Greek Navy.

However, Greek researchers noticed that in that year the US Navy had started experimenting with the extremely low-frequency (ELF) program, which uses electric and magnetic fields to communicate with submerged submarines.

Electromagnetic waves in the ELF and SLF frequency ranges (3–300 Hz) can penetrate seawater to depths of hundreds of meters, allowing signals to be sent to submarines at their operating depths. Building an ELF transmitter is a great challenge, as they have to work at incredibly long wavelengths. The US Navy’s Project ELF system, a variant of a larger system proposed under Project Sanguine, operated at 76 hertz.

The Greek Area 51 at Nea Makri

Instead of the place to house historical objects of the Greek Navy on Mount Penteli, a little later, an underground naval telecommunications base was constructed on the site, which officially operated in cooperation with the American naval telecommunications base in Nea Makri. In 1983, the Nea Makri base was designated by presidential decree as a “Naval Fort”, while the surrounding area was designated a “Surveilled Zone”.

According to reports, the container belonged to EYP, Greece’s National Intelligence Service. It was removed from the church’s interior between 2004 and 2005 after it was emptied of transceivers and other electronic instruments. Its current location is unknown.

Researchers who support the theory argue that the electromagnetic waves of the telluric currents—channels of electromagnetic energy flow that run underground through the Earth—primarily belong to the ELF band. The US Navy built a global telecommunications system based precisely on ELF waves.

The ELF waves of this system propagate basically through the Ionosphere, and from it, through the geomagnetic field, into the subsurface. There is an ionosphere observation station on Mount Penteli that has been funded by NATO research programs for years, while at the northeastern foot of the mountain, just 4.5 kilometers from the point where the Nea Makri base was located, operates the Dionysus Satellite Center. The center deals with “studies of the Geoid in Greek space and changes in the Earth’s gravity field”.

This sanctuary, covering approximately four acres, was dedicated to the goddess Isis. Two well-preserved statues of Isis and her son Horus were discovered among other findings.
