The… “leader of the solution” wants a divorce before marriage

The unbridled enthusiasm and the exaggerations about the result of the illegal vote in the occupied territories for Tufan Erhiurman, in some cases, go beyond even… delusions.
An image is being created that leaves occupying Turkey out of the equation. And this constitutes misleading and distorting the reality experienced by Turkish Cypriots rather than the enthusiastic Erhiurmanites (formerly Erdoganites).
Obviously, Erhiurman is not Tatar. That’s a given. However, he’s not Akinci either. And nobody can dispute that.
Since the enthusiasm that exists in Cyprus, Greece and elsewhere is connected to his stance on the Cyprus issue, many things need to be clarified. Most refer to what he was saying years ago. Even before he took the leadership of the Republican Turkish Party (RTP).
Because afterwards, when the leadership of the occupation regime appeared on his horizon, among other things, he wouldn’t tolerate references to occupation and occupying Turkey. These references bothered him and he showed it, reacting even against his Greek Cypriot comrades.
During the so-called election period, he deliberately presented a fuzzy picture of his position on the Cyprus issue. He was moving towards a loose federation, but his descriptions also hinted at a confederation. He made it clear on Monday in his statements to “Anadolu” that “no foreign policy decision regarding Cyprus will be made without consultation with Turkey during my term”.
This, he said, “has never happened and will not happen under my leadership.” And this seems to have been clarified with Ankara before last Sunday. That’s why the Erdogan regime appears to be tolerant towards Erhiurman.
Therefore, Erhiurman will have to prove that he will change policy on the Cyprus issue. That he will abandon the two-state solution policy followed by the occupation regime thus far.
And since he obviously cannot do it alone, we should expect Turkey to show signs of a “new policy,” the new occupation leader, who is presented with… a halo and as a saviour by some in Nicosia, Athens, Brussels and elsewhere.
Tufan Erhiurman has set, as is known, certain parameters for the resumption of negotiations on the Cyprus issue.
At the end of the prerequisites, which are clearly scrutinised for their targeting, there is the familiar tail that the occupation side has long been putting forward.
In case of a new deadlock, guarantees should be given from the outset to the Turkish Cypriot side that there will be a next day, a regime that will not be the current one. A regime that will obviously be recognised by third parties. What is he trying to tell us?
That he’s discussing divorce before marriage. It is recalled that the then Turkish Foreign Minister, Mevlut Cavusoglu, in June 2021, in a letter to his counterparts of the five permanent members of the Security Council, copied to the UN Secretary-General, had stated that “Turkish Cypriots are safeguarded through a UN Security Council resolution. This new basis will preserve the status of both sides in case negotiations fail or if any agreement reached collapses”.
This was said then, and the Turkish side repeats it today. Who will judge the responsibilities of any deadlock, and what mechanisms will exist? And why is the… leader of the solution thinking about divorce?
This can only be answered by himself, but also by the mourners in the free areas, who rush to ask President Christodoulides to make moves. In short, concessions. They ask him to persuade! To do what, and why persuade?
Are Nicosia’s initiatives being questioned, and is an alibi being offered to the occupation side? So it seems. The one who needs to persuade is Tufan Erhiurman that what he said in the past he means today. And if he means it, he should try to say it to Erdogan as well.
