Unknown individuals caused damage to the large photograph of Melina Mercouri displayed on the platform of the “Acropolis” Metro station. In its statement, STASY noted that initial restoration work will be carried out, followed by the replacement of the photograph.
The photograph depicts the Minister of Culture under Andreas Papandreou’s governments, smiling and waving atop the Sacred Rock of the Acropolis, holding a bouquet of flowers. It was placed in the Metro station from the time of its creation as a tribute to Melina Mercouri’s efforts, especially regarding the reunification of the Parthenon Marbles.
In its announcement, STASY stated that restoration work will begin on Saturday, September 28, in collaboration with an art conservator. Afterwards—at a date yet to be announced—the photograph will be fully replaced with a new one of identical content.
