Opposition parties have accused the government of covering up the truth in the case.
The secretary general at the Ministry of Civil Protection, Vassilis Papageorgiou, who has been charged with tampering with evidence at the scene of the crash, submitted his resignation on Wednesday, while also stating that he bore no responsibility “for any operational acts or omissions concerning the area of the accident”.
The Deputy Minister for Civil Protection, Christos Triantopoulos, submitted his resignation on Tuesday during a parliamentary debate on establishing a pre-investigation parliamentary committee into alleged wrongdoing related to the crash. He also denies wrongdoing.
In an opinion poll presented on Wednesday on TV Channel STAR, 85 per cent of respondents said they believe that the government was “responsible” for the accident and 71.9 per said they believe the government is trying to “cover up” the truth about the Tempi train crash. Only 21.7 per cent said they believe the government is trying to “shed light on the case”.
