By decision of the Deputy Minister of National Economy and Finance Nikos Papathanasis, the Act “Development of Local Action Plans within the framework of the GReco Islands strategic initiative”, which concerns 39 small islands (100 to 3,500 permanent residents) of the North Aegean, South Aegean and Ionian Islands Regions, is financed by the NSRF 2021-2027.
In particular, through this specific Action, the Municipalities of the small islands that will participate in the Greco Islands initiative will prepare in detail their Local Action Plans, which will reflect the vision, strategy and business plan of each island for:
• energy transition,
• sustainable resource management,
• environmental protection,
• green entrepreneurship and innovation,
• digital transformation and
• human resource empowerment.
The Action, with a budget of approximately 1.5 million euros, is co-financed by the NSRF 2021-2027 and is implemented by MOD S.A. as beneficiary, with the 33 Municipalities of the 39 small islands as co-beneficiaries. Significant financial support is expected for the implementation of the projects from the “Environment and Climate Change” and “Just Development Transition” Programs with additional financial contribution from the three Regional Programs of the National Strategic Reference Framework 2021-2027 of the North Aegean, the South Aegean and the Ionian Islands.
The Alternate Minister of National Economy and Finance, Nikos Papathanasis, stated: “This specific decision is part of the Government’s overall strategic planning aimed at sustainable development with social cohesion in every corner of the country. The self-evident national importance of this initiative, as it is addressed to small islands with up to 3500 permanent residents, is identical with the transition of these critical areas towards a sustainable, green and resilient future. It is combined with the increase in investments, jobs and incomes, ultimately with the stay and progress of their residents, especially the young, in their place, making our common vision for the Greece we deserve a reality”.
The General Secretary of the National Strategic Reference Framework, Vasiliki Pantelopoulou, emphasized: “With the official launch of the Local Action Plans, we are opening a new path for the small islands of the country towards a future with energy autonomy, sustainable development and social cohesion. “GReco Islands” is more than a development initiative — it is a new model for the Greece of the islands of the future”.
