A toddler has been found dead after being left in the back of a car in the middle of a deadly heatwave, with temperatures reaching around 35 degrees.
The incident took place in Spain, as the country grapples with a scorching heatwave, sparking several health warnings across western Europe. While not formally identified, the boy, thought to be two-years-old, was left inside his dad’s car on an industrial estate in the Costa Dorada town of Valls near the east coast city of Tarragona.
Emergency services were called around 3pm, when the sun is at the highest point of the sky, with the fire brigade first called to extract the child from the vehicle.
When they arrived, the baby’s dad was beside the child with the car door already open. Emergency services attempted to revive him, with medical responders arriving shortly after.
They attempted CPR on the small child before discovering he had gone into cardiac arrest. Shortly after, the responders realised they could do nothing to save the baby, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
An investigation into the event was launched on Monday (June 30), but it has not been revealed whether any arrests relating to the incident have been made.
It was announced on Monday that one person has already died from extreme heat in Europe, with holidaymakers warned to stay inside. Authorities in Karpathos, Greece, are currently probing the disappearance of a British tourist. Local Greek reports have suggested the 60-year-old Brit has been missing since Friday, when his car was found locked.
Police and firefighters are scouring the area for him with special forces set to join the search today. Over in Barcelona, a woman has tragically lost her life after enduring a gruelling shift cleaning the streets of the Spanish city.
According to El País, the cleaner was working in the Raval neighbourhood of Ciutat Vella during the peak heat of the day. She spent an exhausting eight hours outside battling temperatures above 30°C.
Southern Spain, particularly around Seville, was forecasted to reach a sizzling 42°C over the weekend, while the French Mediterranean coast hit a sweltering 40°C on Saturday – with similar temperatures baking southern Italy and Sardinia.
Meanwhile, UK health bosses have shared an amber heat alert on Tuesday for swathes of the country including London, the East Midlands, South East, South West, and East of England.
