Tragedy strikes North Macedonia, as nightclub fire kills 51

The Balkan country is in mourning after a devastating fire at the “Pulse Disco Club” in the early hours this morning, killing at least 51 people, who were either trampled to death or burned alive. 118 people were injured, many seriously.
The blaze, in the city of Kocani, rapidly spread to the club’s ceiling and panic ensued. According to eyewitness accounts, the fire reportedly started from a firework set off by one of the clubbers, which ignited the ceiling, destroying most of the establishment in minutes.
The death toll is at least 51, said Interior Minister Panche Toshkovski. According reports, the club was packed with 1,500 people when the fire broke out.
Members of the band on stage for the concert, realising what was happening, shouted to the crowd, “Get out, get out!” There was chaos, many were trampled, unable to reach the exits.
Ambulances rushed the injured to the “8 September” hospital in Skopje, while relatives gathered outside the building. North Macedonia has requested assistance from Greece in treating the injured and a number will be taken to hospitals in Thessaloniki.

The Greek Foreign Minister, Giorgos Gerapetritis, held a phone conversation with his counterpart, Timco Mucunski. Gerapetritis expressed his condolences and his country’s readiness to provide all necessary assistance, including rescue teams and medical support.
