Trailblazer and advocate: Sofia Mastoris OAM passes away at 86

The Greek-Australian community is mourning the loss of Sofia Mastoris OAM, a pioneering leader and founding member of the Hellenic Women’s Federation of Victoria.
Sofia, who passed away at the age of 86 after a long battle with illness, leaves behind a legacy of tireless dedication, leadership, and advocacy for women and cultural preservation.
Sofia served as the heart and soul of the Federation for over two decades, championing the rights and identity of women within Melbourne’s Greek-Australian community.
Under her guidance, the Federation became a beacon of cultural preservation and empowerment, fostering leadership among generations of women and building a supportive network that continues to thrive.
Her extraordinary contributions were recognised with the awarding of the Order of Australia Medal, a testament to her unwavering commitment to volunteering and community service.
Beyond her official roles, Sofia was deeply admired for her compassion and generosity, particularly in supporting cancer patients and fostering connections among people from all walks of life.
“Sofia’s dedication to our community was unmatched. Her wisdom, strength, and vision will continue to inspire us,” said Mary Lalios, President of the Hellenic Women’s Federation of Victoria.
Sofia is survived by her son, Nonda, and her grandchildren. She was predeceased by her daughter, Areti, and her husband, Con.
Her absence will be deeply felt, but her legacy will endure through the continued work of the Federation and the countless lives she touched.
