The TRNC government has no clear idea of population numbers* in the country, Yeniduzen writes.
Social media figure Fidias Panayiotou, known only as Fidias, who unexpectedly won a seat in the European Parliament as an independent candidate in the southern Cyprus elections last June, discussed this issue during an online broadcast with Leonidas Pandelidis, a Greek Cypriot member of the Committee on Missing Persons.
Fidias pointed out that, based on unofficial estimates, the population in North Cyprus is nearing that of the south, potentially reaching close to one million people. He suggested that Turkish Cypriots might be more inclined to seek a resolution to the Cyprus problem because they now find themselves in the minority.
Pandelidis, who participated in the discussion, remarked that even the “so-called” government of the north is uncertain about the true population figures, estimating numbers based on the amount of mobile phone cards in use.

*The last census in North Cyprus was taken in 2011 with unofficial United Nations supervision and found the population to be around 286,000, excluding Turkish military and their families residing in military bases. [Ed.]
