Trump misjudged Putin…

Let us begin with the front that Russia opened by invading Ukraine. Today marks 1,283 days of continuous warfare. From the daily briefing summary by the British Guardian, supplemented by Agence France-Presse and Reuters, we have the following—just so we do not forget ourselves. Or rather, so we remember that our own small country was also violated by a mighty invader. Who occupied our territory—our lands—and, like Putin, has annexed them. Indeed, through fraudulent referendums.
The Ukrainian capital came under massive overnight Russian attack, announced Kyiv’s military administration early yesterday morning, Thursday, with at least eight dead and dozens wounded, as well as damage to buildings in 20 locations.
A nursery school caught fire, the administration reported on Telegram, while Mayor Vitali Klitschko stated that a five-storey building collapsed. Tymur Tkachenko, head of the city’s military administration, said Moscow launched ballistic missiles and cruise missiles, as well as Iranian Shahed drones from different directions to “systematically” target residential buildings.
I believe the photograph we publish today, which is also being shown by all major Western media outlets, “speaks” for itself…
The only thing I would add, lest we forget, is this: Kyiv, 28 August 2025, 1,282 days after Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. (Photo credits: Reuters/Stringer)
Meanwhile, as Russia continued yesterday afternoon and evening to attack Ukraine with hundreds of drones and missiles, Donald Trump declared he would “reduce” the 50-day deadline he “gave” Putin to end the war to “about ten or twelve days”—if one can take such a… threat seriously. The “about” part…
Subsequently, the American president, referring to Vladimir Putin, said the following: “I thought he would want to end the war quickly, but every time I thought we were indeed at the end, he continues the attacks and kills people.”
Postscript, just to escape the difficult topics momentarily and “catch” something amusing from the Greek political scene. You will have heard that Alexis Tsipras is preparing for a “grand return” (note: I shall write about this in Sunday’s edition) and reactions, both positive and negative, are mounting. I highlight today this first reaction from Zoe Konstantopoulou. When SYRIZA formed government, she was one of Tsipras’s strong cards and he made her Speaker of Parliament. However, Zoe became furious when Alexis performed his famous U-turn after the referendum—having rejected the measures proposed by our creditors, he watered down his stance, we entered a third bailout programme, but fortunately remained in the EU. And now, with Alexis deciding to return, Zoe minces no words and says the following about her former… political comrade:
“He has not appeared in Parliament for the past two years and two months, has made no speeches, but continues to collect his compensation normally. (Note: Tsipras remains an MP, so how can he claim he misses politics?) He lives it up and apparently even that is not enough for him. When he says he misses politics, he means he misses the money of power, which he loved so dearly.” She concludes by adding that the party Tsipras might create would be called “The Rabbit Hole”!
