In line with protecting Turkish Cypriot rights, Ankara claimed, it proceeded today with filing a protest against the Republic of Cyprus to the UN Secretary General and Security Council questioning the legality of a Navtex issued by Nicosia for ExxonMobil and Qatar Energy hydrocarbons exploration in the country’s EEZ offshore plot 5 from December 24th 2024 to February 24th 2025.
The letter, as reported by the CNA and a number of Greek news outlets, was filed on behalf of the so-called ‘authorities’ in the occupied territories by Turkey’s UN permanent representative Ahmet Yildiz and details Turkish-Cypriot discontent at an ‘illegal’ move. The Republics’ maritime note has absolutely no trace of such illegality, is it was declared in an area internationally recognised as the island’s EEZ and therefore it is entitled by the Law of the Sea to exercise sovereignty over it.
Turkish-Cypriots refer to a ‘violation’ of their rights to the natural resources around the island, with the illegal pseudostates spokesperson further claiming that the ‘Greek-Cypriot administration’, as the Republic of Cyprus is named, is illegally delimitating sea borders and cooperating with international energy companies.
‘The Republic has no legal authority to represent the whole island’, the letter further claims, adding without foundation that Nicosia is constantly rejecting any peaceful dialogue and bicommunal initiatives.
The Turkish-Cypriot ‘authorities’ also reiterate their readiness to take part in the regional Mediterranean Conference, as Turkey has suggested, in line with protecting their rights of ‘all interested parties’.
