The Turkish Cypriot leader, Ersin Tatar, participated in the 3rd Diplomacy Forum of Antalya, organized under the auspices of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and hosted by the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Tatar spoke on a panel with the theme “A New Future for Cyprus” and, as reported by the occupied territories, expressed satisfaction for his participation in such an “important and impressive” forum “despite the political isolation attempts trying to silence the voice of Turkish Cypriots on every platform,” as he claimed.
He argued that the “inhuman and illegal isolation” imposed on Turkish Cypriots must end now, as Cyprus has entered its 61st year, and he stated that since he took office, he has presented a vision to “end this persecution” against Turkish Cypriots.
Tatar further stated that despite obstacles, the development of occupied territories will continue and added that the occupied territories is the representative of Turkish presence in the Eastern Mediterranean and the protector of its interests.
He mentioned that the occupied territories, which have declared independence but received no international recognition, will continue to exist and develop with the support of Turkey.
Tatar stated that the Turkish Cypriot side withdrew its consent for the federation model and proposed its new vision at the informal 5+UN meeting held in Geneva in 2021.
He claimed that the self-declared state “is at least as sovereign as the Greek Cypriot state in the south,” in his expression, and emphasized that the Turkish Cypriot side will not invest in an “exhausted and dead solution model.”
He said that the Turkish Cypriot side has always been in favor of diplomacy and added that new and official negotiations will not start until the “sovereign equality and equal international status” of Turkish Cypriots are confirmed.
He mentioned that Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar was appointed as the Personal Representative of the UN Secretary-General for a period not exceeding six months to explore whether there is common ground between the two parties and that he expects her to objectively report on the facts at the end of these six months.
Referring to the participation of the occupied territories as an observer in the Organization of Turkic States, Tatar said that during the “40th anniversary celebration of the ‘TRNC’ declaration,” the struggle will continue, drawing strength from “the positive development that elevates its position.”
He added that he attaches great importance to meetings with world leaders discussing the Cyprus issue and said that he conveys the views of “Turkish Cypriots and the injustices they face” at every opportunity.
He said he made “official” visits to Azerbaijan and Kyrgyzstan, and added that he met with the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, and the President of Kyrgyzstan, Sadyr Japarov, in order to further strengthen relations and ties between the “countries.”
He also mentioned that there is a desire to establish “good neighborly relations and cooperation with the Greek Cypriot side.”
Meanwhile, as announced by the occupied territories, Tatar also met with the President of the Republic of Tatarstan of the Russian Federation, Rustam Minnikhanov, at the Antalya Diplomacy Forum, during which “emphasis was placed on historical ties, the development of relations, and opportunities for cooperation, as well as regional and international issues.”
