UK Minister for Europe Leo Docherty and Minister of State for the United Nations Lord (Tariq) Ahmad of Wimbledon met with the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy on Cyprus, María Angela Holguín Cuéllar, in London.
The meeting was part of Holguín’s consultations with Cyprus’ guarantor powers, aimed at exploring possible solutions to the long-standing issue.
According to a statement by the British High Commission in Cyprus, during their meeting, both Docherty and Ahmad expressed their support for Holguín’s mission to find common ground in resolving the Cyprus conflict. “Both Ministers reiterated their support for her mandate to search for common ground on the Cyprus issue,” the British High Commission stated.
Holguín shared her initial observations on the situation in Cyprus following her recent visit to the island.
The visit to London also provided an opportunity to discuss insights from previous settlement talks, which could inform future negotiations, the High Commission said.
The UK expressed hope that Holguín’s efforts would lead to the resumption of negotiations between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities.
“The UK hopes that Ms Holguín can work with the leadership of both the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities to enable the resumption of negotiations on the Cyprus issue,” the statement read.
The British High Commission underscored the UK’s role as a “strong supporter of a comprehensive, just, and lasting settlement to the Cyprus issue through a Cypriot-led process under UN parameters.”
The statement concluded with a commitment to continue working closely with all Cypriots and international partners to achieve peace and stability in the region.
