UN condemns Israel’s handling of Gaza crisis, killings of Palestinians seeking aid | FULL
In a meeting convened Wednesday by representatives from the U.K., Denmark, France, Greece and Slovenia, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) condemned Israel’s “inhumane approach” to the ongoing crisis in Gaza and the repeated killings of malnourished Palestinians seeking food and other forms of aid.
“Gaza’s soaring humanitarian needs must be met without drawing people into a firing line.” said Tom Fletcher, the UN’s emergency relief coordinator. “Israel, as the occupying power, is obligated to ensure that people have food and medical supplies. But that is not happening."
The five aligned nations – with the support of several other allies – called for immediate action from Israel, in the form of lifted restrictions on specific aid entering Gaza, an end to forced displacement, and an immediate ceasefire in the region as the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) continues its mission to destroy the Palestinian militant group Hamas.
The latest UNSC meeting comes hours after at least 20 Palestinians were killed in a stampede at a food distribution site run by the Gaza Humanitarian Fund (GHF) – an by Israeli-backed American organization.
While GHF has accused Hamas of fomenting panic and spreading misinformation that led to the violence, Hamas has called the claim "false and misleading," further blaming the incident on GHF and the IDF.
