Vatican Says AI Possesses ‘Shadow of Evil,’ Calls for Careful Regulation

The Vatican has released a paper emphasizing that the ethical course of AI is determined by humanity, urging caution against the potential “shadow of evil.”

The document, approved by Pope Francis on January 14th and released on January 28th, is titled “Antica et nova” (Ancient and New). It addresses the morality of AI, the ramifications of wielding its power for good and evil, and the technology’s current and potential impacts on the job market, education, and healthcare. This follows his prior message to the World Economic Forum, where he warned the attending politicians and business leaders of the serious concerns surrounding artificial intelligence.

“Like any product of human creativity, AI can be directed toward positive or negative ends,” the Vatican document said. “When used in ways that respect human dignity and promote the well-being of individuals and communities, it can contribute positively to the human vocation.”

The document primarily warns business executives and governmental leaders to carefully consider what they do with the technology.

“This issue requires careful regulation, as misinformation—especially through AI-controlled or influenced media—can spread unintentionally, fuelling political polarization and social unrest,” said the document.

In crafting this global warning, the paper aims to delineate the differences between artificial and human intelligence and examine their interaction in a world of rapidly advancing technology. It highlights the distinction between wisdom and intelligence.

“The vast expanse of the world’s knowledge is now accessible in ways that would have filled past generations with awe,” said the Vatican document. “However, to ensure that advancements in knowledge do not become humanly or spiritually barren, one must go beyond the mere accumulation of data and strive to achieve true wisdom.”

The document continues, “Between a machine and a human, only the human can be sufficiently self-aware to the point of listening and following the voice of conscience, discerning with prudence, and seeking the good that is possible in every situation.”

The Vatican emphasizes that the “shadow of evil” exists in all man-made creations and decisions humans make to progress. It notes that progress is inevitable and “part of God’s plan,” but what truly matters is how humanity utilizes this progress.

“As in all areas where humans are called to make decisions, the shadow of evil also looms here,” said the paper. “The moral evaluation of this technology will need to take into account how it is directed and used.”
