From March 18 to 24, the Victorian Multicultural Commission (VMC) will bring the diverse stories and cultures that enrich Victoria in the spotlight, under the theme “Our Shared Stories – Celebrating Together”.
This year’s Cultural Diversity Week aims to highlight the profound intersections that make Victoria’s multicultural fabric honouring the myriad stories of resilience, innovation, and community spirit 2023 brought to light through initiatives like the Multicultural Awards for Excellence and Honour Roll.
Among the notable recipients was Nandita Chakraborty, recognised for her advocacy for individuals with non-visible disabilities in multicultural communities. Through her art installations and films, Nandita sheds light on the challenges faced by women from diverse backgrounds with disabilities.
Helen Stamoulis, an Honour Roll inductee, played a pivotal role in establishing communication channels like 3XY Radio Hellas and Ta Nea newspaper, serving Victoria’s Greek community and fostering cultural connections.
Asvin Phorugngam, another Honour Roll inductee, has dedicated over 25 years to supporting LGBTQIA+ individuals from multicultural backgrounds, designing progressive programs to address social justice issues.
To mark Cultural Diversity Week, councils, businesses, and organizations are encouraged to initiate conversations and host events that align with the theme, fostering understanding and unity within their communities.
Amidst global challenges, the importance of supporting multiculturalism and standing against racism and hate cannot be overstated. Cultural Diversity Week provides a platform to promote inclusivity, peace, and harmony, fostering a society where everyone feels accepted and valued.
Activities during Cultural Diversity Week will span across regional and metropolitan Victoria, facilitated by local councils and promoted through VMConnect, the VMC’s online community platform.
Vivienne Nguyen AM, Chairperson of the Victorian Multicultural Commission, highlighted the significance of Cultural Diversity Week in celebrating Victoria’s diverse tapestry and recognising the invaluable contributions of multicultural communities.
“Multicultural Victoria is vibrant, diverse, intergenerational, and inspiring. Cultural Diversity Week is an opportunity to celebrate these shared experiences and their contribution to our state’s identity.”
“Our multicultural communities remain connected and inspired thanks to these and many other often unheralded champions. Cultural Diversity Week gives us the opportunity to recognise and thank the people and organisations whose contributions create significant impacts on the broader society.”
