As Romania and Bulgaria join Europe’s Schengen zone, there is an added focus on their management of their borders and migrant flows. In an opinion piece for Balkan Insight this week, Victor Lilov takes a critical look at the state of Bulgaria’s immigration detention centres.
Intended as places for temporary accommodation or detention, some have morphed into immigration “prisons” in all but name. For many, indefinite imprisonment without due process has become an ugly reality, with little hope of securing help or release.
