Romania enters 2025 with a new government, assembled just days before Christmas. But while the new cabinet is optimistically promising to restore trust in democracy, kickstart the economy and see off a far-right surge, it will have its work cut out.
One challenge for the ‘new’ government is that it is not so new, and its support is fragile. A more practical challenge will be stewarding a re-run of the presidential elections after the country’s Constitutional Court annulled the first round back in November, due to alleged external meddling.
