A tourist has been seriously injured after being hit by the jet wash of a plane taking off on the island of Skiathos on Wednesday.
The 61-year-old woman was standing on a ledge trying to take photos of the plane taking off, a popular Instagram post for those on the island.
Tourists and locals regularly “hang” off the fence trying to snap pictures as planes fly close over their heads as the feat seems to be garnering a lot of likes on social media.
The woman lost her balance when a strong gust from the plane’s engines hit her and threw her off. Another woman standing next to the 61-year-old tourist was seen falling off, however, she suffered no injuries during her fall.
Skiathos Airport’s short and narrow runway is hemmed in by the sea, a lagoon and a hill, and being close to houses makes it hard for pilots to take off and land.
Doctors at the local Health Center found she had sustained serious head injuries, had a shattered pelvis and a bruised right shoulder and left wrist.
The woman was taken by boat to a hospital at Volos, the nearest mainland city, Kathimerini reported.
It is the second accident on that location in the past few weeks added to a long list of similar incidents.
A spokesperson from the Fraport-owned airport issued a statement that said: “We would like to inform you that Skiathos Airport “Alexandros Papadiamantis” is an international airport of European standards, certified according to the current legislation.
“Regarding the incident that took place on 07/05/2022 concerning the injury of a 61-year-old British woman who was filming aircraft take-offs from Skiathos Airport, we wish to clarify that this incident took place outside the premises of the airport.
“We wish to emphasise that the airport operator has taken all necessary security and safety measures within the concession premises, and therefore also the airport, and anything that takes place outside of these boundaries does not fall within its responsibility. In any case, the safe and smooth operation of the airport and the safety of its passengers is always the company’s first priority.”
